Review: Ada

Edinburgh University Theatre Company
Bedlam Theatre, 11 Bristo Pl., Edinburgh – until August 30th
2 Stars (2 / 5)

A multimedia and verbatim piece inspired by the life of Ada Lovelace – the first ever computer programmer!

The concept holds much promise – and the material is often engaging for its historically educational quality – but ultimately the lectures which intersperse the drama draw far more interest than the drama itself. Although the lines of the play are taken from Ada’s own words drawn from letters and records, they are often delivered too quickly and dramatically to carry such archaic language. The result is that the performances are often laborious, repetitive – or just plain boring!

In their attempt to synthesize contemporary physical theatre, dance and multimedia with classic narrative Edinburgh University Theatre Company come out the better in their use of modern mediums than traditional.
