Review: Anya Anastasia – Rogue Romantic

Anya Anastasia
Assembly Checkpoint,  Aug 9-27

4 Stars (4 / 5)

Anya Anastasia’s cabaret is fun, flirty and frivolous as she muses about love and relationships through her music, accompanied by a fierce trio of women on keyboard, bass and drums. Her musical style is both familiar and distinct, as if Taylor Swift, Regina Spektor, Florence Welch and Marilyn Monroe were rolled into one tall, gorgeous woman who is unafraid to flaunt her sexuality and joke about femininity.

At the same time, Anastasia’s show is as much about the audience as it is about her. Audiences are encouraged to let loose and have fun instead of sitting politely in their seats. The energy of the crowd will very much determine the fun they have that evening.

Anya Anastasia’s voice is worth the cost of the ticket price alone. There is something both sweet and seductive about it beyond her Australian accent. If strawberries could talk, they would probably sound just like her.
