5 Stars (5 / 5)

HG Wells The Time Machine was not, alas, turned into a radio play in the 1950s, but if it was it could hardly best Laurence Owen’s attempt at recreating it as such. Not only is Owen a formidable voice actor who takes on a host of different roles including the protagonist, a cynical news-reporter, a Freudian psychotherapist and card-carry communist, but… he composed the entire score and plays theremin along to boot.

This new telling of The Time Machine plays off several well-loved comedy tropes with a contemporary spin. Accomplice, Lindsay Sharman ices the cake bringing perfect pastiche to her role of radio station attendant.

What is more The Time Machine features as part of PBH’s Free Fringe, miss it and there will be no going back…
